On Saturday 7th of December we took a bold action to advocate for turkeys. We did this to shine a spotlight on the horrors faced by millions of these gentle animals each year. Our team staged a peaceful and impactful protest at a Tesco store in Cambridge, blocking a supermarket aisle to deliver a critical message: it’s time to choose compassion this Christmas.
We carried signs and distributed leaflets featuring powerful images of turkeys and asked the question: “Will you be their Christmas miracle?” Sitting on the ground, we peacefully prevented access to the freezer section where turkeys were displayed for sale. Security personnel quickly intervened, and asked us to leave. They tried to intimidate us; however, we remained resolute. We left of our own accord when our message had reached a large number of shoppers.
Despite the staff threatening to call the police, they were not called, and the action concluded without incident. Our efforts even made it into Cambs News and Varsity, which has helped amplify our message even further online.
Throughout the sit-in, we handed out dozens of leaflets and engaged shoppers in meaningful conversations. Many paused to consider the reality behind the festive tradition. Turkeys are sentient beings capable of forming bonds, expressing emotions, and enjoying life. Yet in the UK alone, nine million turkeys endure brief, grim lives on farms, only to be slaughtered for meals. A large proportion of these will be killed for Christmas.
The holiday season is an opportune time to reflect on the impact of our choices. By choosing vegan, we can extend compassion and help end the suffering of millions of animals. Our sit-in drove this message home and highlighted the need for change.
Turkeys are intelligent and curious animals with unique personalities. They deserve freedom and respect, not lives tragically confined which ultimately end at the slaughterhouse. Our action highlighted these truths and challenged the public to reconsider their holiday traditions.
The streets and shops are bustling during the festive season, providing countless opportunities to share the animal rights message in creative ways. Whether it’s through protests, conversations, or acts of kindness, let’s make this a season of empathy and awareness. You could even try stickering and follow the tips in our previous blog on how to do it effectively.
This Christmas, we urge everyone to leave turkeys, and all animals, off their plates and choose compassion.
As always,
for the animals!
