Following our second undercover investigation at Gressingham Duck, we have been informed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) that multiple workers who we caught on camera abusing ducks have had their slaughter licences suspended. This is solely down to our investigation and Animal Justice Project reporting the findings directly to the FSA.
Gressingham Foods have CCTV in the area that we filmed, which would have recorded the very abuse that we exposed. Why were these workers not dealt with by Gressingham Foods beforehand or even Red Tractor during their inspections? It is unlikely that this is the first time that all of the workers filmed had roughly handled ducks and breached many regulations. Guidelines by both the government and Red Tractor are to uphold two very important UK and EU laws: EU regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing as well as the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (WATOK) regulations for England.
We filmed 15 Red Tractor and government breaches in just 12 hours.
With Gressingham Foods killing around eight million ducks each year, with a large proportion of these around the Christmas period, the abuse that these ducks face both within their sheds and slaughterhouse is distressing and abhorrent. This company claims “we’re a family-owned and -run business, determined to do the right thing by our ducks” – how is exploiting and killing “the right thing” for any animal?
No animal deserves to be treated this way and we must push for an end to this industry altogether!
