June and July have been exceptionally busy and rewarding for us at Animal Justice Project. We have not only been campaigning for the RSPCA to drop RSPCA Assured but have also been planning our Cage-Free Isn’t Cruelty-Free Week of Action, a top-secret investigation launch, and an exciting collaboration project. We can’t wait to reveal the details of the last two when the timing is right.
You’ll have seen that back in March, we released part one of our cage-free egg farm exposés and in May, we released part two. The seven farms, all of which were RSPCA Assured at the time of filming, have been used to highlight the horrors of the egg industry during our RSPCA campaign and again during our Week of Action. Our findings were tragic and heartbreaking, so we have been working hard to inform the public about the horrors we witnessed. In addition, we have been drawing on our previous investigations to show the systemic failings of the RSPCA Assured scheme.
Our petition launched at the start of June, demanding the RSPCA drop RSPCA Assured, and gained significant traction. Backed by numerous celebrities and influencers such as Peter Egan and Joey Carbstrong, the launch was covered by Vegan Food and Living, along with Sussex World. This collective effort made a powerful statement in our campaign against the RSPCA.
Our efforts certainly have not gone unnoticed. We co-hosted a protest outside the RSPCA’s headquarters on their 200th anniversary weekend, which over 100 activists attended. Photos from the event made it into The Guardian, and it was reported about in the Somerset Apple. In further support of the petition, we also carried out several impactful online actions, including an X-storm with over 1,500 posts going directly to the RSPCA and RSPCA Assured. Our petition, currently at 7,635, is a testament to the growing support for our cause.
Combining the groundbreaking nature of our undercover work, and the building momentum of the RSPCA campaign, we directed our focus back on the UK egg industry by planning our Week of Action. This is because 51% of egg-laying hens in the UK are RSPCA Assured. We will have a full breakdown of this action in our following newsletter as there’s still a few teams to take part!
We are seeking a part-time Social Media Marketing Manager to manage digital marketing strategies and content creation! You can find out more information about the vacancy here. The closing date is 2nd September 2024.
Do you have experience in finance? We’re seeking someone who can spare a few hours weekly to lend their skills to our growing organisation. By doing so, you can help us operate more smoothly and allow us to focus on our campaign work. If you can help, please do get in touch with us.
Animal Justice Project will be at the Vegan Party Conference in September. We will have a stall where you can come and meet us, and our Campaigns Manager, Ayrton Cooper, will host a panel called ‘Moving Beyond the Welfare Paradigm’. As a thank you, we have a unique discount code to share, which will get you 20% off your entry fee: AJPVPC24.
Our campaigns team writes regular blogs, and we are delighted to have an excellent volunteer writer, Julie Hurst, on our team. Between us, we have produced blog content that highlights the industry’s failings and our campaign efforts. You can read them all on our blog page, but here are a few key examples:
I am delighted to share a breakdown of our efforts at Animal Justice Project over the last two months. We have many exciting projects to reveal to you soon. However, this is only possible because of your continued dedication to this movement and our ultimate goal of Animal Liberation. Your support is invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for it. Thank you so much.
As always,
for the animals!
