ANIMAL JUSTICE PROJECT LAUNCHES PETITION AGAINST IMPORT OF MONKEYS!

ANIMAL JUSTICE PROJECT LAUNCHES PETITION AGAINST IMPORT OF MONKEYS!

In our new Special Investigation, we have launched a Change.org petition aimed at halting the import of 120 monkeys for malaria research into Sweden from the United States, and ending primate research altogether in Sweden.

Our new Swedish Partner, Djurrättsalliansen, has received information on the import and use of 120 captive-bred macaque monkeys for futile malaria experiments at Karolinska Institutet – a leading university in Stockholm and the LAST university there to continue using primates for research.

It is not yet known how the monkeys will arrive into Sweden, or when. What we do know is they are being transported from the United States, and they have not yet arrived. It is unlikely that the monkeys will be exported directly into Sweden, but will be flown instead to Hartelust for quarantine. It is possible that they will spend the last leg of their journey in a van, similar to the one in which the four monkeys died on the same journey in 2005.

Researchers at Karolinska Institute have received ethical approval to conduct a series of invasive experiments on the monkeys, for the purpose of developing a vaccine against human malaria. 120 long-tailed macaque monkeys will be infected with malaria parasites and multiple invasive procedures will be performed on the monkeys over the next five years – including bone marrow biopsies, repeated vaccinations and blood sampling (up to 25 times per year). Lymph node biopsies will be obtained from the armpit or groin.

Although the biopsies will be performed under general anaesthesia, the monkeys will likely experience pain and discomfort afterwards.

All of the monkeys will be kept in cages, possibly 2 meters high and 4 meters wide, some with a floor area as small as two square meters. Stress and fear is imposed on monkeys used in experiments as a result of being caged, their inability to express normal behaviour and separation from their family groups.

NOW is the time to #REACT!

SIGN THE PETITION!
We know that the monkeys HAVEN’T YET ARRIVED into Sweden, so with your support we can put an end to this. Sign and share the petition to Karolinska Institutet!

READ THE CAMPAIGN REPORT!
Read and share the report by our Science Advisor, Dr Andre Menache, outlining why the primate experiments at Karolinska Institutet are not only unethical, but also futile and of dubious legal standing. Read and SHARE it here!
